The new Apple Macbook also has limited onboard flash storage – and since there likely won’t be USB-C drives out of the gate, we can assume that any external drive will have to go through the same dongle adapter situation. The default Macbook will come with just 256 GB of storage, upgradable to 512 GB – which are PCIe based and flash, so. Macbook Air M1 laptop with a Traktor Pro S3 (updated to latest version via Native Access) Tracks are supplied from a USB stick, loaded into Traktor. Both USB stick and Traktor are connected to this USB C hub, and macbook's power cable is connected to that hub as well to supply power. All programs are off (Google Chrome etc.) to minimize CPU usage. USB-C is a complicated standard, and if you’ve got a new USB-C laptop, you’ll probably want an external hub to get back some of the ports you’re missing, lik.

The adapters and cables in this article work with these Mac computers and iPad Pro devices:

  • Mac models that have Thunderbolt 3 ports. These ports support both Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C connections.
  • Mac models that have a USB-C port. This port supports USB-C connections.
  • iPad Pro models that have a USB-C port. This port supports USB-C connections.

To find the right cable or adapter for your Mac or iPad Pro, use the information below to identify the connector on the end of the cable coming from your display, hard drive, camera, hub, or other device. Check the end meant to plug into your Mac or iPad Pro.

Thunderbolt 3

If you're using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable or other Thunderbolt 3 cable with your display or other device, it will connect to your Mac without an adapter.

The Apple Pro Display XDR and LG UltraFine 5K Display use Thunderbolt 3.

USB-C

If you're using a mophie USB-C Cable with USB-C Connector or other USB-C cable with your device, it will connect to your Mac or iPad Pro without an adapter.

The LG UltraFine 4K Display uses USB-C.

USB-A

If you're using a USB-A cable with your device, use the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter, the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, the Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter, or another USB-C to USB-A adapter to connect your device to your Mac or iPad Pro.

To charge an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C port without one of these adapters, you can use the Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable instead.

Ethernet

If you're using an Ethernet cable with your device, use a third-party USB-C to Ethernet adapter, such as the Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter.

Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2

If you're using a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 cable with a Thunderbolt display or other device, use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.

This is the correct adapter for the Apple Thunderbolt Display.

Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are not the same as Mini DisplayPort . They have the same shape, but use different symbols on the cable and port.

Mini DisplayPort

If you're using a Mini DisplayPort cable with a Mini DisplayPort display, use a third-party USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter. Check with its manufacturer for compatibility with your Mac and display model.

This is the correct solution for the Apple LED Cinema Display.

Mini DisplayPort is not the same as Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 . They have the same shape, but use different symbols on the cable and port.

  • <span style=”background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);”>Hi guys

Wondering if anyone can shed a little light my way. I’m looking for a powered usb hub for my MacBook Pro, I run a Traktor S4, Ableton Push, Maschine, Audio 2 DJ Interface and occasionally a USB drive and some other things iPad /iPhone. I’ve just purchased the Advent 312 http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computi…28377-pdt.html but sometimes when I boot the Mac up it doesn’t always power the Maschine or S4. Been looking at some other models and someone said that Native Instruments only use the dlink hubs but which model are these?

    Thanks in advance </span>

    Hi,

Unfortunately the link you posted doesn’t work for me, so can’t see exactly what model you have.

As a general rule, a USB-port has a maximum amount of power it can deliver. That’s laid down in the USB standard.

    For USB 2.0 it’s 500mA, for USB 3.0 it’s 900mA and for 3.1 (newest version since 2013) it’s a whopping 2000mA (or 2A which means 10Watt! @ 5Volt, as opposed to 2,5Watt for USB 2.0).

Now, this is PER PORT! Let’s say you have an 8-port USB 2.0 hub and you want to use all of them for full power, the hub would need to have an external power supply that can supply 8 * 0,5A = 4,0A @ 5V. Quite frankly, a 4A power supply is a pretty big one.

I just picked a random one:

And you can see where it says capacity 5Watt. @ 5V that is a grand total of 1A 0r 1000mA. Divide by 4 ports and presto, with all ports going only 250mA per port. Half of what it could be.

Long story short, you can get a USB 2.0 powered hub, but you’d have to check the supplied power adaptor can deliver 0,5A per port. Brand should not play a part. It’s really as simple as how much power do you need and how much can the hub supply. Normally with stuff like mice, memorysticks and even some external HDD’s it’s relatively low, but when you start hooking up stuff like full blown controllers and Maschine it soon starts to add up and there is just not enough power available.

First rule of engagement, imho, is to always use external power on any device if it has that option (so the S4 for example, always use power adapter, not the USB only option).

So, two steps to get going:

    1) use all units mentioned with their own power supply if at all possible (S4, Push – not the Maschine & Audio 2 DJ I think)

    2) Get a powered USB hub with a strong enough power supply

    Hope that helps & greetinx.
